Keeping an eye on the Arctic: USA and ambition over Greenland

Donald Trump told Fox News that the United States is negotiating "full access" to Greenland. The statement, given during the World Economic Forum in Davos, reignites the debate about American strategic interest in the island, especially in a context of growing geopolitical importance in the Arctic.

Greenland, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, has a strategic location between the Atlantic North and the Arctic Ocean. Its vast territorial extension is home to significant natural resources, such as rare minerals and oil reserves, as well as sea routes shortened by polar melting ice.

American ambition for Greenland is not new. In 1946, then-President Harry Truman offered $100 million for the island, a proposal that was rejected by Denmark. In 2019, Trump again expressed interest in the purchase, generating a strong reaction in Denmark and the international community.

The renewed US interest may be related to the growing importance of the Arctic for American national security. According to a report from the Congressional Research Service, the Arctic is becoming a "point of strategic competition" due to increased Russian and Chinese military activity in the region. The American military presence in Greenland already exists through Thule Air Base, a key facility for the US missile warning system. The quest for "full access" could involve expanding that base or creating new military installations. Which could generate friction with the local population and environmentalists.

"I can't comment on whether this involves land acquisition, but we are certainly working closely with the Danish government," a State Department official told Reuters in 2019, when asked about Trump's interest in purchasing Greenland.

The American foray into Greenland raises several questions. What is the environmental impact of the exploitation of natural resources on the island? How will the Greenlanders be involved in decisions about the future of their territory? Wouldn't the quest for "full access" be disrespecting Greenland's autonomy and Denmark's sovereignty?

Trump's statement, although brief, sheds light on a growing geopolitical dispute in the Arctic, where the interests of great powers clash with the rights of local populations and the urgent need to protect a fragile ecosystem. The development of this negotiation deserves attention, as it could redefine the power map in the region and have lasting consequences for the planet.
